Overview

Overview:

Do you feel a need to strengthen your leadership in times like these?
Have you come to know that knowing more stuff isn’t it?
Do you wish you could reset yourself and your internal clarity?
Do you just want to help, stepping in and stepping up?

People everywhere, in these times, yearn for connection, for depth. For friendship, for voice. For presence, for depth.

Circle Because…
it is the most basic form of turning to one another
for essential deep listening,
careful speaking, and
intentional focus
on the issues at hand.

Circle started around the cook-fires of humanity’s ancestors and has accompanied us ever since. We “remember circle” as much as we learn it. We remember as we listen, as we speak more thoughtfully, and as we lean in to shared purpose. Today’s complex work and living as human beings, from boardroom planning to community organizing and social activism, requires building strong and trusting containers to be not only in our dreams, but in our honest difficulties. The Circle Way gathers people into a circular shape with participants at the rim and the purpose in the center. Each person has a voice and everyone can see and hear one another. Social agreements and practices help facilitate respectful conversation and imaginative wondering. Circle supports a leader in every chair.

Song Because…
giving voice,
is a primary link to connect you with people around you
in full expression
to come from your heart and mind
through the noise.

Human beings have always sung together as a way to build courage, affirm connection, endure challenge, and foster joy. It doesn’t take much to revive the spirit of song among people. A  simple, nourishing song, skillfully offered, can create aliveness and community almost instantly. Whether or not a leader learns to lead singing, it is essential that s/he experience the gifts song has to offer to any group. Making sound together helps us exercise our individual voices in harmony with each other on behalf of a shared vision. Is there a better description of an elegantly functioning organization or community?

Ceremony Because…
it includes ritual and planting seeds for initiatory experience,
where we meet more deeply our own souls
and our genius in the world;
it is how we grow up
to transform, beyond words, who we are.

Ceremonial Ritual, simply put, is a physical act of faith, or a faith gesture. It leaves room for the dance with the sacred. Ceremonial Ritual is more than just ceremony. Whereas in ceremony, each step is carefully planned out and there is often no room for the sacred to show up, for the unexpected, for the unseen — Ceremonial Ritual is where this world and the spirit world meet. The power of ritual is that it invites in the spirit world, it helps us remember to call on the sacred and the profane all at once to help us on our journeys. This calling on the spirit world is an invocation. It acknowledges that we are not alone and that there is more to see than what we contemporary society has taught us to see. It acknowledges that there are forces beyond ourselves that can influence our journeys in ways that we couldn’t on our own.

Spud’s Thoughts:

The folks hosting this gathering are really great. I know of their work mostly through the Art of Hosting community which has been a great source of support and wisdom in my work.
