Overview

Overview:

The goals of the Thousand Currents Academy are:

  • To train the next generation of social change leaders in cultural and ecological competence, self-assessment, and tools in managing dynamic differences;
  • To ground learning in grassroots-led practices, pedagogies of community organizing, and inclusive appraisal toward principled action;
  • To change the attitudes, language, skills, and knowledge of change makers so that they can more effectively mobilize resources in favor of social justice;
  • To connect social change leaders to grassroots wisdom by offering tools, models, and good practices from faculty who are global thought leaders and frontline community organizers—movement builders, ecologists, artists, and funders—people like Glanis Changachirere, human rights, democracy, and feminist activist from Zimbabwe;
  • To support change makers in embodying creative, connected, and culturally competent ways to tackle the root causes of poverty and injustice.

The Thousand Currents Academy is now an accredited course with the University of Vermont! The three-credit, graduate-level course, titled “Power, Privilege, and Partnership: Practicing Philanthropy and Supporting Grassroots Social Change, “is part of the university’s Leadership for Sustainability master’s degree concentration.

Spud’s Thoughts:

I don’t know much about the org personally, but the individual who shared this opportunity with me said they attended before and got a lot out of the week. I appreciate the fact that the org spent some time grappling with the complexities of what ‘international development’ means and went as far as to change their name to better represent the work they are committed to.
